History of The Surrey Oaks
|
Good quality food is served in the restaurant and in the bar. Food is NOT served on Sunday evening or Monday evening (click here for the full restaurant opening times).
The Restaurant is situated away from the main bar areas. A Specials Menu is always available and Traditional Roast Dinners are available on Sundays. If you intend eating at The Surrey Oaks, PLEASE book in advance (especially for Sunday Lunches).
A typical Specials Menu, displayed on a blackboard in the Dining Area, is shown here (click the image):
A good selection of deserts is available to compliment your meal.
The Surrey Oaks also sells a selection of fine wine by the bottle or by the glass. Our Current Wine List is shown below. Click the left image for General Information (front and back) and click the right image for the complete Wine List!
Good quality bar snacks are available. As with the Restaurant, bar snacks are NOT served on Sunday evening or Monday evening.
The current Bar Menu is included below (click the images):
The last image provides the full restaurant opening times.
The Surrey Oaks is an attractive 16th century pub with stone flagged floors, a large inglenook and a choice of drinking areas, each with it's own set of regulars.
The Surrey Oaks is a regular CAMRA award winner and the latest awards are listed in our Awards section. The Surrey Oaks has done more to promote micro-breweries than any other pub for miles around. Two guest beers are always available - these change with every cask. A Beer Festival is run over the Late Spring and August bank holiday weekends.
Outside, there is a Boule Pitch and large pleasant garden which really comes into its own in summer (the clickable images below are of an early April day!).

The BOULE PITCH (photo above left) is available for casual general use at a very reasonable
price of £2 per
45 minute period (just ask at the bar). Boule has proved to be so popular at the Surrey Oaks, that a second boule pitch
(or 'piste') was built in the summer of 2009 and is situated to the left of one shown in the photo.
The pitches can also be hired for special events. The only
thing to be aware of is that the Boule Pitches are likely to be used by the Surrey Oaks Petanque Club
on Sunday Afternoons and Monday Evenings (weather permitting).
The Boule pitches were built by the Surrey Oaks Petanque Club and are not directly run by The Surrey Oaks.
If there's anyone out there who wants to challenge the Surrey Oaks Petanque Club, we think you'll find your offer is snapped up very quickly!
And now, continuing with our pub description...., The Surrey Oaks also has an unusual pub sign in that it depicts two very different pictures on either side.

Here is some history about The Surrey Oaks (some of which appeared as questions in a Pub Quiz, deviously arranged by Ken, to support 'National Pub's Week'!)
The original parts of The Surrey Oaks date back to 1570. It seems, however that it did not become an inn until c. 1850 when Mary, widow of James Butcher, a wheelwright, was described in the tithe redemption schedule as an "innkeeper". In order to provide an additional income, Mary turned the house (which continued as a wheelwright's) into an inn.
Mary died in 1859 but her son William is described in the census returns of 1861 and 1871 as an innkeeper and brewer. It appears therefore that William gave up the wheelwright's shop and started to brew beer.
At around the turn of the 20th Century, the Duke of Norfolk sold the Surrey Oaks to the Reigate brewers Mellersh & Neale who were eventually acquired by Friary Meux of Guildford.
Friary Meux no longer exists (it being bought by Carlsberg-Tetley who, true to form, stopped brewing its one remaining beer).
Today, however, The Surrey Oaks is friendly pub serving good food and a great selection of beer, most coming from Micro-Breweries. William would hopefully have approved of this!
