May Bank Holiday Beer Festival 2009 - 22nd May to 25th May

We told you the weather would be great for our May Bank Holiday Beer Festival and we were right! In fact, we did a much better job than the Met Office.

As ever the entertainment was well received with the Buckland Shag Morris Men performing on Friday evening, followed by the Café Racers on Saturday evening (a Rhythm and Blues band who escaped electrocution from the rain [again]) and finally, the Phoenix Dixieland Jazz Band who played on Monday lunchtime to a packed garden. Judging by the numbers of people watching, clearly the entertainment was a success.

As for the beer? Well, this year we had a huge beer list (47 beers) and clearly they would not all make an appearance. We ended up with an amazing 39 beers, the last of which went on in the pub at 7.30pm on Monday (Hop Back - Summer Lightning). So which beer did we enjoy the most? Well the returned marks have been added up and the winner is:

Phoenix - White Monk (4.5% ABV)

The Full Results and the winner of the prize draw for two bottles of wine can be seen by clicking on the 'Beer of Festival' image below.

Also shown below are the final beer list (click on the image or the link below it for the better PDF version) and the Beer Tasting Notes (provided by George Davis) as a PDF file.

So there you have it, another excellent Beer Festival has drawn to a close. If you are interested in seeing what our other Bank Holiday beer festivals have been like, you can of course click on the links below:

August (2008), May (2008), August (2007), May (2007), August (2006), May (2006), August (2005), May (2005), August (2004), May (2004), August (2003).

Please remember to check our Real Ales section on this website. We always have a great choice of real ales, three of which change with every barrel (almost a mini-beer festival!).

Finally, thanks must go the great man himself, Ken, the Landlord. These Beer Festivals are not easy to organise and a lot of planning and hard work goes into making them the success that they are. This year in particular, for various reasons, it's been harder than most for Ken to organise. So all that's left to say is, quite simply, Thank you Ken and all your staff for making this a great Beer Festival!.

So now we get enjoy the summer months and then an August Bank Holiday will arrive and we all know what that means.... yes, we get to do it all again!
